Now let’s break down the six most common reasons you might get hit with the WSOD and how to bounce back fast.

Reason 1: Shady Themes or Plugins

Badly coded themes or plugins = the #1 suspects. Anything not built right can crash your site faster than a pop-up scam. This is why I side-eye any plugin that hasn’t been updated in 2+ years or has 2-star reviews and a prayer for support.

✅ Fix 1:

• Go into your File Manager or FTP.
• Rename your plugins folder (ex: plugins-hold) or the specific plugin folder if you already know the shady one.
• Refresh your site. If it loads? Boom, you found the villain.

Strategy Pro Tip: Never experiment on your live site. Create a sandbox (aka staging site) for your “let’s try this” moments.

Reason 2: Core WordPress Files Got Messed Up

Sometimes a failed update or corrupted backup messes with your foundation. You’re working with busted blueprints.

✅ Fix 2:

• Head to WordPress.org and download a fresh copy.
• Replace your core files except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php file.
• Still nervous? Backup first, then update.

• Add this line to your wp-config.php: define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M');
• Or ask your host to boost your PHP memory.

Word to the wise: If your hosting is cheap, your site performance will be too. Upgrade when it makes sense.
